Types of Tires

The three main types of tires are regular or bias ply, belted, and radial.  Years ago bias and belted tires were the top sellers. The majority of tires sold today are radial tires. Radial tires tend to have better traction than other types of tires.

High performance tires are designed for vehicles that travel at high rates of speed and are rated for speed.  Typically they have a speed rating of H or higher and provide excellent handling and traction.  Tire companies have developed entry level high performance tires with speed ratings of S and T, and are a great alternative if you only want the sporty look of high performance tires. S and T speed rated tires are considerably cheaper, they have a longer tread life and warranty. They provide a better quality ride as well. Buy tires that are in the entry level high performance category, if you want the sporty look but don't actually need a high performance tire.  The tire store or tire manufacturer can provide more information on tire speed ratings.
